Phonics and Reading
At St. George’s School we teach systematic synthetic phonics using the ‘Read Write Inc’ scheme. Please click on the link to find out more.

The ‘Read Write Inc’ scheme is primarily used from Reception to Year 2 as the children are learning to read. It is used through Key Stage Two to continue to support children with reading and also to support spelling. Videos to help you are available here.
In June the statutory phonics screening check takes place for all Year One children, the assessment will test the children’s ability to read real and nonsense (alien) words. Parents are informed of whether their child has met the required standard when they receive their child’s report in July. More information can be found here https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/194057/phonics_check_leaflet_2013_.pdf
Pupils who have not reached the required standard by the end of Year one will continue to receive phonics teaching and retake the check at the end of Year Two. We use a variety of reading schemes in school including Oxford Reading Tree, Dandelion Readers and Collins Big Cat.
